Tracking and Completion of CE Credits (All CIRO advisors)
Continuing Education (CE) Requirements for CIRO Advisors
What are CE Credits?
CE credits stand for Continuing Education credits. They're part of a formal system to ensure that financial professionals—like CIRO-registered advisors—stay current, competent, and compliant with evolving regulations, products, and industry best practices.
Who must comply?
All Registered Representatives (RRs) and Approved Persons registered under CIRO (formerly IIROC & MFDA) must complete CE requirements within each CE cycle.
CE Cycle Duration
- A CE cycle is 3 years long.
CE Credit Requirements per Cycle
Category | Mutual Fund License Only | Securities License (CSC) |
Compliance | 10 credits | 10 credits |
Professional Development | 20 credits | 30 credits |
Note: The number of PD credits for securities-licensed RRs is higher to reflect broader market coverage.
Tracking CE Credits
Advisors are responsible for:
- Ensuring their CE credits are completed within the cycle
- Keeping a record of course names, providers, dates, and proof of completion
- Submitting proof to the firm or via internal tracking tools (if provided)
Firms are responsible for:
- Maintaining internal CE tracking for each advisor
- Submitting attestations of CE completion to CIRO by the deadline (typically early the following year)
- Ensuring CE providers are accredited (e.g., FPSC, IIROC, Advocis, etc.)
Additional Notes
-
Credits cannot be carried forward into the next CE cycle.
-
Duplicate courses within the same cycle do not count more than once.
-
Late completion may result in registration restrictions or suspension.
